Mission Statement

Minimize

The mission of the National Audubon Society is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the Earth’s biological diversity.

The mission of the Wabash Valley Audubon Society is the same as the N.A.S. mission. Additionally to further this mission WVAS is involved in appropriate projects to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, interact with other local organizations and groups with similar concerns, and provide educational opportunities to the local community to increase their awareness, appreciation, and involvement in the natural world that surrounds them.

The Wabash Valley Audubon Society (a chapter of the National Audubon Society) was founded in 1961 and serves the west-central Indiana counties of Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo.  As our name might imply our members are primarily interested in birds and birdwatching.  This leads us to also be very concerned with many natural resources conservation issues that contribute toward our passion for enjoying our natural environment.  To this end, we participate in many local events and festivals to promote natural resources conservation.  We have also sponsored birding identification education classes, invasive species control, and the establishment of a butterfly garden at Dobbs Memorial Park in Terre Haute.  Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area is a favorite destination for many of us and thus we became "founding friends" of Friends of Goose Pond.  In recent years we have rescued native woodland plants from future construction at the Indianapolis International Airport.  As we all know, protecting habitat is the key to wildlife conservation forfuture generations; therefore during the past year we have advocated absolutely protecting the largest black soil tallgrass prairie in Indiana at the Newport Chemical Depot in Vermillion County.  Currently, we are really excited about the newly created Wabashiki Fish & Wildlife Area and the future expansion of this area.  Please browse this website, Facebook or Twitter to learn more about us and our activities.
